Merchant guilds arose in the 11th century with the growth of commerce and urban communities. When merchants traveled from market to market in faraway cities, groups of them often banded together for mutual protection. . In time, the merchant guild gained an interest over the entire industry and commerce of the city, supervising the various crafts and selling all the commodities manufactured in the city. It also acquired considerable political influence. A local merchant guild sometimes admitted merchants of other cities; as a result, merchant guilds developed that involved the commerce of several cities.
